Known Gotchas (Painfully Learned)

  1. Localized invoice templates - Country-specific accounting modules (l10n_xx) create PRIMARY mode views that branch off from the standard template. The module now detects these and inherits from the localized view instead of the base template. Without this, customizations appear to do nothing.

  2. XPath expression precision - XPath expressions must exactly match the Odoo 18 template structure. The hasclass() function is critical for targeting Bootstrap-styled elements. Template structure changes between Odoo versions.

  3. Style vs Attribute customizations - CSS styles require the attributes position type. The _build_xpath_element() method handles this mapping, but manual customizations must use correct position values.

  4. One default per company - SQL EXCLUDE constraint enforces single default template per company. Setting is_default=True automatically unsets previous defaults via _check_single_default() constraint.

  5. View generation timing - Generated views are stored in ir.ui.view with mode='extension'. They are only applied after action_apply_template() is called - draft templates don't affect invoice output.
